These are the voices of a generation. They echo through the years and deliver a message of hope,
determination, and the spirit of a nation. These voices belong to brave soldiers who fought for the very freedoms that we enjoy today. They tell the story of young men and women from all over the United States, leaving their homes to serve their country.
In small towns like Winchester, Kentucky, young men enlisted in record numbers.  Most did not wait to be drafted. Throughout the 1930s and early 1940s, Winchester was a largely rural, agrarian town with traditional values and a patriotic spirit.  Like most of Kentucky,  little happened in the town of Winchester.  In a small town close to Winchester,  the local Rook Club and a Spelling Bee vied for front page news. This simple life that most Kentuckians took for granted became anything but simple on December 7, 1941.
Throughout this website you will find information about the various roles in which our veterans served during World War II and the post war years. You will see and hear first hand accounts of men and women who fought and supported one another in the most fearsome struggle in the history of mankind. From the beaches of Normandy France, to the steel production facilities of America and the mountains of Guadalcanal,  seemingly ordinary men and women accepted the call to service. Their oral histories give us a hint of what they lived through.

We dedicate this project to all the men and women who have bravely served our country to save the world from tyranny.  We are especially indebted to the Winchester Veterans Project for allowing us to take part and giving us permission to use the interviews they conducted.  Finally, we extend our infinite gratitude to the veterans who shared their personal stories, but more importantly risked their lives so we can enjoy the freedoms we have today.  HISTORY 399 Students at Morehead State University, Fall Semester, 2005
